While cookies can be a positive tool for web pages to better serve their users, cookies can however can be abused and made to give out statistical information such as what web pages you visit, or all your key strokes over a period of time without your knowing, They can also give out personal information, even take control of hardware connected to your computer such as web cams. Being aware of these possibilities is part of the first steps towards protection and there are a growing number of programs that can help further. Some programs such as LavaSoft's Ad-Aware & Ad-Watch keep a close watch over your system and like Anti Virus has updates to try and keep ahead of the bad guys. This program has served me well, but no one Anti Spyware program is yet 100% and some advise using two or three such programs for the best possible protection.
