Being aware of these possibilities is part of the first steps towards protection and there are a growing number of programs that can help further. Some programs such as LavaSoft's Ad-Aware & Ad-Watch keep a close watch over your system and like Anti Virus has updates to try and keep ahead of the bad guys. This program has served me well, but no one Anti Spyware program is yet 100% and some advise using two or three such programs for the best possible protection.
