Welcome to Tall Tales,
For most people to be willing to spend hundreds and thousands of hours of their lives building wood models of the Great Tall Ships of History, there is another aspect to this dedication (Addiction?) that we rarely discuss, and this is their History and Myths. We sometimes forget the battles they fought, how they spread of colonies across the New World and beyond. Often these ships were state of the art with new technologies that made these long voyages into the unknown possible, and often these ships were old and only just barely up for the tasks that made them famous. Then there is the effect all of the ships of fame and lesser fame had on the Governments and the people of the world, then and even today. There is also the Myths that sail with our favorite ships. A little bit of truth, allot of the romance are a part of certain ships where their captain and crew have become legends often taller then life. Many we've known since childhood and dreamed about as we put together our first models of these ships together. Even though they were likely plastic for most of us, they still had the power to make the imagination dream of what life was like in the days of sail and wood. Tall Tales is open to all Members with an interest in writing about the ships they've built or wish to build. It can be Fictional, Historic, or a deep look into the Myths that come to us in the present day. In the Fiction category you can attempt to create new Myths based on your favorite ship's History.'. In Myths you can tell us all about the lore of the ships you admire most. In History you tell us about the known facts around the Ships you admire, Their captains, crew, and Admirals and what effect these events had then and now. Myths? There are more Myths about the well known ships then hard facts, Just try and say with confidence whether or not Thermopylae was indeed faster then the Cutty Sark. In most Myths, there is a grain of truth if you look carefully enough, Tall Tales Myths is also your chance to defend or prove a Myth wrong. You can send your articles to talltales@drydockmodels.net to be posted. Please try to be as factual as you can about true History and as imaginative as you can about Myths of your own making as well as those already handed down to us through time. More so then anything else, be sure your work is original. You can add photos and drawings to your presentation, perhaps some form of animation as well if your so inclined. The three main categories, Historic, Myth, and Fiction are just a start for now. If in the future we may need to refine these categories, but for now this is a good start. Fiction will cover more categories without a doubt, but for now we mean writing your own Myth about a ship you know well, humor, ot short stories. Myths should detail the existing Myths and hopefully some lesser known Myths. Better known Myths such as the one about Black Beard's headless body swimming three laps around the ship before sinking should still be a challenging subject and some interesting reading. With your help we can Learn what truth there is in the old Myths and how the stories evolved over time. History can be anything from an order of facts to facts and your own opinion on how the historical events about a given ship or fleet effected the world at the time, and in many cases right into the present. There are three, maybe many more thousands of years of sailing History. What we know often depends on where we come from, so what may be everyday to you, may be completely unknown to many of us. So don't be afraid to send your favorite ship's' History to us
